Volkswagen India to begin the assembly of 1.5-litre diesel engine

Volkswagen has increased its production operations in India as it has just began with the production of its new diesel engine assembly and full-fledged engine testing facility at its plant located in Chakan, Pune. The plant was built to assemble the Volkswagen Polo and the Vento back in 2010 and then even the Fabia production had shifted to this new plant. The assembly of the new 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine is scheduled to commence at the end of 2014. Volkswagen India has invested INR 240 crore in this first step of engine assembly and production of parts and components at suppliers in India.

 
Mr. Mahesh Kodumudi, Group Chief Representative, Volkswagen Group India and President and Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited said: “Our investment in this state-of-the-art engine assembly line which incorporates a sophisticated and full-fledged engine testing facility at our Pune Plant in Chakan is the next important step in strengthening our commitment towards India. With this, we take a significant leap towards enhancing our localisation in India.”

 
Volkswagen India has invested in a new engine assembly line. The new engine to be produced in India will be the new 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine that was specifically designed and developed for the Indian market and recently unveiled at the launch of the new Volkswagen Polo. It underscores the importance of the Indian market and the focus on the Indian customers’ needs. With this 1.5-litre engine, Volkswagen can avail the duty cut and this will help the company reduce the price of its diesel cars. The German auto giant had last year introduced the new 1.2-litre turbo petrol to avail the benefits for the petrol engines and now it is ready with the diesel one too. The new engine assembly line will be integrated into the existing structure of the Volkswagen Pune Plant in Chakan. launched new Polo and the Polo GT TDI.
