2020 Mahindra Thar Looks Production-ready; Gets Alloy Wheels

Mahindra seems to be in the final stages of testing the 2020 Thar based on these latest set of spy shots. This particular test mule might be fully camouflaged but it looks closer to production and more upmarket than the outgoing model. 

As seen in numerous previous spy shots, the second-gen Mahindra Thar gets a Jeep Wrangler-like silhouette and a factory fitted hardtop. It also features round headlamps flanking the seven-slat front grille, indicators on the flared front fenders, and fog lamps in the bumpers. 

But the focus is on the new five-spoke alloy wheels it’s wearing, which reports suggest are 18 inchers! It also wears a full-sized alloy wheel unit on the rear door. The tail section gets rectangular but upright LED illumination units with reflectors or rear fog lamps in the bumper. Dimensionally, the new Thar will be longer and wider than the outgoing model and could carry an increased wheelbase as well. 

The interior of the new Thar has been spied earlier revealing a more premium cabin with much-needed front-facing rear row of seats. The dashboard layout is expected to be all-black with a touchscreen, steering-integrated audio controls, and manual controls for the AC with, of course, a lever for the 4X4 low range gearbox. The 2020 Mahindra Thar is likely to be powered by a new BS6-compliant 2.0-litre diesel engine coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox. This engine is also going to do duties in the Scorpio. This time, Mahindra might offer an automatic option as well as a petrol engine. 

Mahindra is expected to showcase the second-gen Thar at the 2020 Auto Expo. Given the significant upgrades, the Thar could command a premium over the existing model, which retails for Rs 9.60 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
