The first quarter of the year 2012 has been a mix of ups and downs for the Indian auto industry. The car market first registered tremendous growth in the months of Feb and March, then the announcement of hiked excise duty in the union budget 2012-13 sent a wave of grief among the customer and the car-makers. Amidst this there was one thing that never got on back foot and that was the launch of new cars and especially the multi-purpose vehicles. The year 2012 can be marked as the ‘year of the MPV’ in the history of Indian car market. Already on roads are the recently launched revamped versions of MPV segment leaders, Toyota Innova and Mahindra Xylo. Then there is Maruti Ertiga that has been officially released today. The upcoming MPVs Chevrolet Enjoy and Nissan Evalia are expected to be rolled out somewhere in August.

Then there is Mahindra Xylo Mini and Ashok Leyland Stile lined-up for launch taking the total figure of MPVs to 7 for the year 2012. The upcoming Chevrolet Enjoy MPV has been developed by General Motors and its Chinese partner Wuling that belong to the SAIC group of China. This new MPV is said to be affixed with the 1.3-liter Fiat MultiJet diesel engine and possibly a 1.4-liter petrol engine too. The prices of this 7-seater MPV are likely to be on the lines of Maruti Ertiga rather than Toyota Innova or even Mahindra Xylo. In China, this MPV is known as Wuling CN100 whereas in all the other markets it is known as Chevrolet CN100. The Nissan Evalia is more like panel van which is a rebadged version of NV200 MPV. Nissan Evalia will be housed with a 1.5-liter K9K turbo diesel engine.

This engine is widely famous for enabling an easy and smooth drive on the account of its trifling turbo lag and impressive fuel efficiency. An additional advantage of this car is the rear sliding doors which makes getting in and out of the car pretty simple and quick. Initially, this MPV is a 7-seater but more seats can be probably squeezed in as an option. Ashok Leyland will also be rolling out Stile MPV as the rebadged NV200 MPV. The engine specifications would be the same as that of Evalia’s and in addition to the passenger segment, Stile will be launched for the purpose of moving goods. A CNG version of this car is too on the cards.
