GM labour strike completes a month

The hundreds of General Motors workers are on strike since one month and still no compromise has been done between the GM and the workers. From March 16, 2011 all the General Motors India Halol plant workers are on strike. The company is suffering loss of an estimated 150 cars per day in this facility.

General Motors has announced 25th March date for the workers to call off the strike but till now only 200 striking workers have  returned on the job and others are still on strike. The US auto company recorded a production loss of about 1,500 units within one month.

As per the sources the talks between the management and the workers have failed, only 200 employees returned on work. General Motors are willing to cooperate with the employees who are on strike and except all their demand. No other detail has been announced yet on this matter.

On the other hand, the American auto giant reported some improvement in the production after some employees returned to work but loss of production is still continuing.

GM's Holol facility has production capacity of 85,000 units a year but company claimed that workers are not doing well. So the company thought of transferring some employees to dealership outlets. For it a long-term wage settlement agreement has been done between company and workers in this December previous year.

GM worker has a strong and registered union under shade of Congress-backed Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC). Meanwhile Gujrat Government said that this strike is illegal and preventing the gathering of the workers near the plant, Section 144 of IPC imposed by the Government at near facility.

General Motors India Vice President P Balendran reported that Halol plant is an outstanding workplace for lots of employees which has good history in terms of employee safety. The facility awarded by many of safety and other awards along with 2010 award. And the company will try to provide better health, safety, working conditions and employment to the workers.
