Polaris Industries car manufacturing subsidiary hopes to make its foray with electric cars in India. The electric cars 'Gem' and 'Breeze' which are already sold in the U.S. and the European markets will be brought into the Indian market first before they consider their other range of vehicles for the country. However, Pankaj Dubey, Polaris India Managing Director was a little skeptical about the lack of infrastructure for electric vehicles in India.

This makes the Polaris India to wonder if the electric cars will be ideal for the domestic purpose or more to tap its off-roading capabilities. All said, Polaris India chief, Dubey has gone ahead to unveil their All-terrain vehicle (ATV) line-up last Saturday. Polaris as a car manufacturer is well established and quite well-known for its expertise in the on and off-road vehicles and hopes to garner half of its growth from its utility vehicle segment. The Polaris utility vehicles though not quite popular around this part of the world are supposed to be ideal for the mining and industrial purposes.

By the looks of it, the U.S. based car manufacturer has big plans in store where India market is concerned once its kickstarts its journey in India with the electric vehicle line-up.  Their growth in India car market seems to be the top most priority at the moment eying for a turnover of Rs 5 billion by 2016. However, it’s too early to even think along the lines of its utility vehicles foray into the country. Right now, the auto major seems to be more focused on the area where the Indian auto industry is still taking baby steps.

Lack of infrastructure has kept many car manufacturers like General Motors from taking a step in that direction, who despite having an ideal electric car up its sleeve are thinking twice regarding the launch. The General Motors president Karl Slym who displayed their Chevrolet Beat electric prototype had himself said that there is a long way to go before they introduce the Beat EV version in India. The domestic car manufacturer Mahindra will however launch the latest version of their Reva electric car Reva NXR in early 2012. Nissan Leaf EV is the other car that Japanese auto major hopes to bring to the 2012 Auto Expo though for a display at the moment alongside Reva NXR from Mahindra's pavilion.
