Volkswagen will be pulling the plug on the CC, replacing it with the Arteon. Super cool name, we know. But, what exactly is it, you ask? Think of a Volkswagen Passat, but with a coupe-like profile. What the Audi A7 is to the Audi A6, the CC is to the Passat. Now that we have that out of the way, here's what its successor is going to be all about.

The good folks from Wolfsburg say that the Arteon "is positioned above the Passat and emphasises emotionality in the upper mid-class". The sketches of the fastback are meant to provide a glimpse into the evolving design philosophy at Volkswagen, which we think is clean, minimalistic and classy. The big three-slat grille, LED headlamps and the sleek silhouette look striking, yet reserved. Tobias Sühlmann, Volkswagen Exterior Designer, explains: "At first sight, the Arteon arouses enthusiasm through its expressive design. It then surprises through its practical virtues. This combination is unique!"

While Volkswagen has remained tight-lipped about most details, the press statement gives out a few tidbits including the fact that it will feature frameless doors, and "top-hinged and wide-opening tailgate provides optimum access to the huge boot." Also, the Arteon looks like it borrows heavily from the Sport Coupe GTE (also pictured), don't you think?

There's an interesting take on why the car will be named 'Arteon' too. Volkswagen says that the 'Art' describes "the fastback's harmonious lines and emotionality" whereas 'eon' classifies it as a top-spec Volkswagen - just like the brand's flagship in China - the Phideon.

The Arteon will be showcased at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Chances of it coming to India are next to none, but we wouldn't mind a slick-looking fastback in Volkswagen India's roster.
