After a lot of talks, VinFast has officially begun production at its Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu plant on 4 August 2025, and the VF 7 is the first vehicle to roll off the assembly line. This marks the shift of VinFast from a new entrant to a skin-in-the-game manufacturer in India.

As the Indian roll-out gains speed, we take a look at how this factory puts VinFast in it for the long run, and how the VF 7 (and its sibling VF 6) represent that commitment:

The Thoothukudi Plant: Architecture of Commitment

    VinFast India manufacturing plant launched

VinFast's new factory in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, is a declaration of intent of its continued commitment to the country. Covering 400 acres in the SIPCOT industrial complex, the site was specifically selected due to its proximity to the port, high logistics potential, and favourable state government backing. The factory will produce approximately 50,000 units in its initial phase, with the capacity to increase to 1.5 lakh units a year in the future.

The facility accommodates a full ecosystem of operations with a Body Shop, Paint Shop, Assembly Line, Quality Control, and Supplier Park in addition to specific logistics spaces to facilitate smooth production.

    Investment And The Blueprint Ahead

The investment plan is equally aggressive. Already having infused Rs 4,000 crore, VinFast has planned to take this amount to close to Rs 16,000 crore over the next several years, one of the biggest foreign EV investments in India.

When fully scaled, the plant will create 3,000–3,500 direct employment opportunities and several hundred more in the supplier base. Significantly, this is VinFast's first manufacturing plant outside Vietnam, highlighting India's emergence from being merely a sales destination to a proper manufacturing hub.

What Does It Mean For India?

Strategically, the firm will start with CKD and semi-knockdown assembly and gradually enhance component localisation. Long-term, VinFast can use India as a regional export platform serving South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

In addition to producing cars, the plant has committed to fostering an ecosystem of local suppliers, technology transfer, and workforce training, in effect integrating VinFast into India's EV ecosystem, not as a foreigner, but as a dedicated collaborator in India's electric future.

The VF 6 & VF 7: Twin Pillars Of VinFast's India Entry

VinFast has taken the first step on its India adventure with two premium electric SUVs, the VF 7 and the VF 6, both emerging from its new Thoothukudi factory.

    VinFast VF7

The top-of-the-line model is VF 7, with aggressive styling, a luxury dual-tone interior, a 12.9-inch digital display, HUD, ventilated front seats, and a glass panoramic roof. It is available in FWD (201 PS) and AWD (354 PS) variants, with a claimed worldwide range of up to 532 km. Prices start at Rs 20.89 lakh and go up to Rs 25.49 lakh (ex-showroom) in five trims.

    VinFast VF6

The VF 6 is the compact, budget-oriented variant. It has tidy coupe-like looks, the same technology-rich cabin, and a 59.6 kWh battery with an up to 468 km range (global WLTP). Between Rs 16.49 lakh and Rs 18.29 lakh, it comes in three variants.

    Final Take

VinFast's Thoothukudi factory is about more than bricks, steel and machinery; it's a message of intent. Launching the VF 7 as the first "Make in India" car is a show of faith in its delivery and desire to serve Indian customers. Combined with the more affordable, competitively priced VF 6, VinFast has added ambition and pragmatism to its strategy for India.

It would be a great journey to witness as VinFast spreads its network, customer base and product portfolio in India over the next few years.
